For the poor folks like us who lack the privilege of living near the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, where you can find  the best Guinness beef stew in the world, here is a recipe for Guinness beef stew that will tide you by in your weaker moments.

Admittedly, this recipe is just shadow of the one in Dublin, but packs enough of a punch to make you crave for more.

Serves 3 to 4
Ingredients
  • 50g butter
  • 1kg stewing steak (chuck is a good part to use), cut into strips
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 5 carrots, sliced
  • 3 potatoes
  • 100ml beef stock
  • 600ml of Guinness
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 4 bay leaves
  • salt and pepper
Method
  1. Season the beef with salt and pepper
  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan, brown the beef in it and set aside.
  3. Cook the the onions in the same saucepan  until they turn tender. Then add salt, pepper, ground nutmeg and flour to the onions and cook for about 1 minute.
  4. Add the carrots, potatoes, stock, Guinness and bay leaves.
  5. Bring to a boil, place the lid on and let it simmer for about 1 hour.
